Tuesday Keynote: Broadband as a Community Investment, not a Profit Center

Fairlawn, Ohio has taken a different approach with building broadband.  Instead of asking if the financial upside of a network build is feasible, the City instead asked – what are the ramifications to our economic future if we don’t build? In our opening keynote, Ernie Staten will review how Fairlawn approached broadband as essential infrastructure, forming a municipal broadband utility that offers fiber connectivity to the City’s residences and businesses.

Staten will talk about the secrets to success of FairlawnGig network, its rapid uptake, and expansion plans to nearby communities.  He’ll review the impacts to-date as well as the new and innovative plans the City has to drive services to and increase engagement with citizens.

This session will also preview the rest of the conference and what attendees can expect from at the inaugural Great Lakes Connect!
